Upcoming Events

Free educational programs are presented at our Colorado Archaeological Society monthly meetings, which are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Meet and greet portion of the meeting begins at 6:30 PM. Lecture begins at 7:00 PM. Programs are held at the Redlands United Methodist Church, 527 Village Way, Grand Junction, CO 81507.

 

June 24, 2026

Topic: Operation Monster Slayer. The Recovery of Sacred American Indian Artifacts. This talk covers an investigation conducted into the theft and illegal sale of items sacred to Native American tribes in Arizona and New Mexico. Her presentation will include photographs of numerous seized sacred objects that archaeologists suggest were used during the period of Native American prehistory and are still used today.

Speaker: Lucinda Schroeder has a degree in criminology from the University of Maryland. She worked as a special agent for the US Fish and Wildlife Service for 30 years. She is the author of two books which are based on her career as one of the few federal female undercover agents.

Topic: ”The Struggle for Bears Ears National Monument—with Updates.” Dr. Andrew Gulliford will tell the Bear Ears story and provide recent updates on the political controversy that put this region, sacred to five Native American tribes, at the center of an ongoing debate on public lands policy.

Speaker: Andrew Gulliford, PhD, is a professor of history and environmental studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. He has received numerous prestigious awards for his teaching, style, research and publications. His books include Bears Ears: Landscape of Refuge and Resistance, Lonesome Landscapes: Stories from National Conservation Lands and Sacred Objects and Sacred Places.
